Waits named his new album Blue Valentine; it is a valentine of sorts, a coded message of love and affection to Rickie Lee, who claimed she had been ‘playing one of Tom’s sexiest characters. His entire record . . . seemed to be inspired by his relationship with me.’27 It’s the start of Waits moving away from the jazz-piano-based musical texture that had defined his previous five albums and performances to date. He described his new sound as ‘contemporary urban blues, sort of like the music of Ray Charles, of Jimmy Witherspoon’.28 He wanted to find a much harsher edge to his music as an appropriate response to the times he was living in and the unpredictable feel of LA’s sprawling street life:
